UPFA leads in the postal votes count in Batticaloa And Ampara

In the East Provincial Council Election Postal Vote counting for Batticaloa district is over. Out of the total of 4,427 postal votes in the district, United People's Freedom Alliance received 2159 Votes and leading followed by United National Party 1282 Votes and Tamizh Democratic National Alliance received 454 Votes. in Ampara district total of 8548 postal vates, UPFA received 4722 votes.

Tigers fired mortar and killed 4 innocent villagers in Amparai district

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, the separatist Tamil outfit, in a desperate bid to interrupt the polling in the East Provincial Council has fired mortars towards the Village of Namal Oya located in the Amparai district, killing 4 innocent villagers and injuring many.
Our reporter in the east further reported that security forces have discovered two claymore bombs in Valaichaenai.

This morning around 7.00 a.m. Voting began in the 1270 polling stations in three districts, Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampaarai, of eastern province. Polling for the East Provincial Council is reported to be progressing calmly, except for a few reported minor incidents.

'Ex-Invincible' sunk in Trincomalee Harbour

At approximately 2.15a.m., local time an under water explosion damaged and caused logistic vessel A-520(MV Invincible) to sink while moored at the Ashroff jetty in Trincomalee harbour, today (May 10).
No lives were lost due to the explosion. A-520 was a merchant vessel built in 1970's and handed over to the Sri Lankan Navy, following a court order after it was apprehended while transporting 254 illegal migrants off Tangalle in 2003.

Minister Ferial Ashraff had just passed through the area where an explosion had occurred in Ampara. The Minister was safe.

At least 7 people were believed dead and 30 injured following the blast near the City Café Inn in Ampara this evening.

Explosion reported in Ampara Town

A Large explosion took place in Ampara town short while ago, sources said.

According to the available information a bomb has been exploded around 5.45 p.m near the "New City Cafe" hotel in Ampara town.

Sri Lanka Army captures Adampan Town

Sri Lanka Government troops fighting against Tamil Tigers on the Mannar front, captured Adampan town area this morning from the Tamil Tigers, defence sources said.

Government troops captured Adampan tank and two square km of ground area South of Adampan today. Army conducted operations from yesterday morning and captured the area.
At least 15 Tiger cadres were killed in hours long fighting erupted between security forces and the Tamil Tigers in the area, Media Center for National Security (MCNS) said.

It was reported that two army soldiers died while 7 others suffered injuries, MCNS further said.
Defence sources further revealed, Army liberated about 2 square kilometers area, lies between the Neelachcheana road and the dam of the Adampan tank, in the South of Adampan town.
