The opposition leader of the North-Central provincial council, Maj General Janaka Perera (Retd) and many others were killed when an LTTE suicide cadre blew himself inside the United National Party (UNP) office near the Old Bus Stand in Anuradhapura this morning, 6 October.
According to the latest information, over 25 including the wife of Maj Gen Janaka Perera (Retd), few UNP provincial councilors, UNP Manager in Anuradhapura Dr John Pulle and his wife, were killed due to this explosion.
Over 90 civilians also sustained injuries and they were rushed to the Anuradhapura hospital immediately.
The bomb blast occurred around 8.45 a,m in a function held to declare open the new UNP office in Anuradhapura, sources added.
Major General Janaka Perera (Retd), RWP, RSP, VSV, USP, rcds, psc was a politician and also served as the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army (2000-2001).
After retiring from the army he served as a Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Australia & Ambassador to Indonesia. He was the opposition leader of the North Central Provincial Council.
Opposition Leader, Major General Perera was educated at St. Joseph's College, Colombo joined the Sri Lanka Army in 1966 as an Officer Cadet. He received his training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England and completing training he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Ceylon Engineers. Maj. Gen Perera is a graduate of the Royal College of Defence Studies.
